Comparison

GEO versus SEO: difference and overlap.

Two disciplines with different goals and a shared foundation. Here is where they coincide, where they do not, and where a Swiss company should start.

Side by side

Nine characteristics, compared directly.

The table shows why the two disciplines are not the same thing and should nevertheless not be handled separately.

Characteristic SEO GEO
Goal Position in the result list Inclusion in the generated answer
Success metric Ranking, clicks, organic revenue Mention rate, citation rate, position in the answer
Who decides An algorithm, then the user The system; the user never sees the alternatives
Main lever Relevance, authority, technical quality An unambiguous entity, independent sources, quotability
Role of your own website Central Necessary, but not sufficient
Role of third-party sources Backlinks as an authority signal Mentions as the content source of the answer
Time to effect 3 to 6 months first movement in 6 to 12 weeks, substantial after 4 to 6 months
Measurability Established, many tools Only with a fixed prompt set; no standard tools
Number of systems Essentially two, Google and Bing At least five, with different mechanics

Overlap

How big the overlap actually is.

Measured across 5,000 keywords and more than 150,000 citations, complemented by a separate study across 15,000 long-tail questions.

Perplexity

91 %
of cited domains come from Google’s top 10. At URL level, 82 per cent.

Google AI Overview

86 %
of cited domains come from the top 10. At URL level, 67 per cent.

Long tail across all systems

12 %
overlap at URL level. This is where the breakdown into sub-questions takes effect.

Swiss figures

What that means here.

Classic search

When people in Switzerland look for a provider they do not yet know, 80 per cent start at a search engine. Google holds around 83 per cent of the search market; on desktop, Bing reaches almost 17 per cent. That is the device B2B research happens on, and Bing’s index feeds Microsoft Copilot.

AI answers

47 per cent of 16- to 74-year-olds use AI, the third-highest figure in Europe. 73 per cent of those users apply it at work, the highest in Europe. 13 per cent start their provider search in a chat; among the under-30s, 21 per cent.

Sequence

Where to start.

The question comes up less often than you would think, because most of the work serves both surfaces anyway.

  1. FirstThe shared foundationIndexing in Google and Bing, consistent company data across all sources, structured data, loading time, permitted crawlers. This work cannot be divided and takes effect on both surfaces immediately.
  2. ThenA quotable content structurePages that answer, fact and FAQ blocks, comparison and decision pages. The same pages rank in classic search and get adopted as an answer.
  3. After thatIndependent sourcesTrade media, associations, directories, reviews. Works as a backlink for classic search and as a content source for the AI answer.
  4. ThroughoutMeasure separatelyRankings and mention rates are collected differently and must not be mixed. This is the only part that genuinely needs two procedures.

Frequently asked

Common questions about this.

SEO targets a position in a result list, GEO inclusion in an answer generated by an AI. With SEO the user picks from ten hits at the end; with GEO the system picks and the user never sees the alternatives. Technically both share the same foundation: indexability, clear entities, structured data and independent mentions.

With the technical foundation that serves both: indexing in Google and Bing, consistent company data, structured data, permitted crawlers. This work cannot be divided and takes effect on both surfaces. Only after that do the paths separate, when it comes to content formats and source building.

No, but clicks are getting scarcer. In Germany around 20 per cent of searches show an AI answer, the click-through rate on position 1 falls there from 27 to 11 per cent, and the market loses roughly 265 million organic clicks per month — 6.6 per cent of all organic clicks. At the same time the German-speaking region is the least affected of the markets measured, and commercial and brand queries have been affected least so far. For searches on a company name, the click-through rate with an AI answer actually rises by 18.7 per cent.

For Google’s own AI surfaces and for Perplexity it helps considerably; there, 86 to 91 per cent of cited domains come from the top 10. For ChatGPT that does not hold to the same degree; there the Bing index is decisive. Measured across 15,000 long-tail questions, the overlap between AI citations and Google’s top 10 at URL level is only around 12 per cent, because the systems break the question into sub-questions and search for each separately.

No, and separate budgets pay for the same work twice. Entity architecture, technical readability, content structure and mentions in third-party sources take effect on both surfaces. The only thing that sensibly stays separate is the measurement, because mention rates and rankings are collected differently.

More important than most people assume. Across all devices, Google holds around 83 per cent of the Swiss search market, but on desktop Bing reaches almost 17 per cent. Desktop is the device B2B research happens on. On top of that, Bing’s index feeds Microsoft Copilot. One study found that 87 per cent of ChatGPT citations matched Bing’s top results, against 56 per cent for Google. The sample was small, but the finding is notable for the Swiss market.
