Guide In short: ask a fixed set of real customer questions, in several AI systems, over several weeks. Count three things: whether you are named, whether your website appears as a source and where you are listed. A single query is not enough because answers vary. Last updated 6 October 2026 · Guide for Swiss companiesHow to measure whether ChatGPT recommends your company.
Step 1
The right questions.
Measure with the questions your customers actually ask. Not with your company name.
- Need questions: “Who makes small batches of CNC turned parts in eastern Switzerland?”
- Comparison questions: “Which payroll providers suit SMEs with 50 employees?”
- Problem questions: “How do I reduce the scrap rate in injection moulding?”
- Brand questions: “What does company X offer, and for whom?”
Leave your own name out of the first three types, otherwise you only measure whether the AI repeats your name. A useful set has 15 to 40 questions. Fix it once and do not change it while you measure.
Step 2
Systems and conditions.
Which systems
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overview cover most research. Claude and Gemini matter in some industries. The systems draw on different sources and therefore often give different answers.
Same conditions
Logged out or via the API, same location, same language, same rhythm. Personal history and location change the answers. API results can differ from the app; what matters is that you always measure the same way.
Step 3
Three metrics.
Mention rate
In how many answers does your company appear in the text? The most important number, because users mostly read the text.
Citation rate
How often does your website appear as a source? Cited pages bring visits and show which content the systems use.
Position
Where are you listed among the providers named? Those named first get more enquiries.
Competitors
Who is named instead of you, and with which sources? That tells you where to start.
Example
An example: our own tracking.
meit tracks its own visibility daily with 15 German-language questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overview, location Switzerland. From 7 September to 6 October 2026, around 970 answers were evaluated:
- meit was visible in around 4 percent of answers, meaning named or cited as a source.
- Almost all mentions came from Perplexity. ChatGPT and Google AI Overview did not name meit in this period.
- For “Who offers AI visibility analyses in Switzerland?” the figure was 23 percent, for “Who is the best SEO agency in Zurich?” it was zero.
Two lessons: an average across all questions hides where you are strong and where you are invisible. And each system needs its own look. The figures for other agencies are in the AI visibility benchmark.
Tools
Yourself, with software or with an agency.
| Approach | Suited for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| By hand | A first impression with five to ten questions | Time-consuming, hard to repeat |
| meit AI Check | Sample of 15 answers in about 30 seconds, free | Snapshot, no time series |
| Tracking software such as Finseo, Profound or Otterly.AI | Daily tracking of a fixed question set | Shows the status, not the measures |
| Agency | Measurement and implementation from one source | Costs more, pays off above a certain order value |
